Happy New Year & Welcome Back!

Today in ELA, we began our story writing unit.  I shared with students a VERY basic story about the Three Little Pigs, and then asked students to provide me with feedback. Students were very clear on the missing components of my story:

A.S. – lack of details
A.H. – lack of descriptive vocabulary but could identify problem
V.B. – telling the story versus ‘showing’ the story
E.d. – lack of introduction, context, and depth of characters
A.H. – boring and was not interesting
D.H. – very short
L.I. – no context or character motivations
A.C. – not painting a picture in the reader’s head and no literary techniques
R.M. & A.D. – you didn’t tell me how!  I was left with lots of questions and no explanations.
C.M. – small details were left out
L.S. – need to describe the setting

We continued our writing block as students worked on being descriptive as they attempted to describe an item in the classroom which their partner was required to sketch. Students quickly learned you needed to be descriptive and detailed in order for your ‘reader’ to see the same picture as you.

In math, we returned to our Number Sense unit and began our lessons and practice in long division.  We will continue to work on this process, and related problems, throughout the week.

Lastly, if you have not already done so, please return the cross-country skiing acknowledgement of risk form.
Thanks,
Ms. McGrath
