Happy Thursday!

Today we finished our read aloud novel Inside Out & Back Again, which is a story of a family forced to flee their home and country during the Vietnam war. The novel provided students with a first-hand account of a refugee’s struggle in a new land, and it offered the students insight on the value of resilience and perseverance.

In math students explored rectangles with an equal area. Students were required to determine all the possible rectangle configurations with a given squared value. They then calculated the perimeter of their rectangles to compare the different sums.

Just as a reminder, students are still gathering items for the Calgary Drop-In Centre. Possible donation items may include:
  • razors for shaving
  • shampoo
  • tums
  • cough drops
  • travel sized band aids
  • vitamins
  • small Advil packets
  • travel mugs
  • water bottles
  • toothpaste & toothbrushes
  • $2 to $5 gift cards

Happy Wednesday!  Hope everyone is staying warm!

Today in math, students worked to identify squares and rectangles with the same perimeter. Once identified, students then calculated the area for each shape. Our learning objective was to utilize the formula for perimeter and area, as well as prove that shapes of the same perimeter would have a different area measurement.

In art today, students continued to work collaboratively on their Northern Lights project in preparation for the art auction.  You will be available to view and bid on their pieces the evening of the Winter Celebration.  Here is a sneak peek at a few of the finished pictures:

Happy Tuesday,

Today in math, students learned how to calculate the area of a square and rectangle.  The students learning objective was to solve problems involving area, as well as identify and compare units of measurement.

Students also began an art project in preparation for the art auction. Our project was inspired by our current study of magnetism.  Our art piece will display the Northern Lights, which are created when solar flares enter earth’s magnetic field.  Look to see these beautiful oil and chalk pastel images when visiting our art auction on Dec. 12th, 2019.

Happy Monday,

Upcoming Agenda Items:
Wednesday, November 27th ~ Orange Oompa Loompa spelling test
December 2nd –December 5th ~ African Dance Residency

Today students began their holiday letter to a Canadian Armed Forces member. Students will be forwarding along their well wishes for the season, and letting them know how much their service is appreciated. Students will be drafting letters this week and will also include some hand-drawn pictures.  Students will not be signing their personal name to the letter, but will be signing as “A student from Calgary.”

In math, students continued to work with perimeter and measurement as they explored the classroom to conduct calculations. Taking the measurement of a variety of items, students determined the perimeter and also practiced conversions between cm and meters.
