In ELA, students continued to work on their dialogue and narration scene. Students received homework requiring them to correct dialogue punctuation.  The rules for editing dialogue include:

Happy Wednesday!

Today in ELA, we reviewed the rules for adding dialogue into our stories. Students were then prompted to write a conversation between two interesting characters (e.g. a sock and a shoe, a shark and a surfer, etc.). Students will be building upon their dialogue piece over the next few days as they incorporate narration in order to create an interesting and engaging written exchange.

In the afternoon, we were visited by Ms. Lana, who shared her family history and stories from Belarus. As a class, we had just finished reading the novel Breaking Stalin’s Nose by Eugene Yelchin. The novel study reinforced our understanding of different government types and citizen participation. Ms. Lana shared her great grandparent’s experiences and hardships while living under the regime. She then shared some of her own personal stores as well as some insight into the current political climate.

Thank-you Ms. Lana for sharing your stories and experiences with us! We found them very interesting and enlightening.

Today in math, students played Fraction Splat!  They were required to determine an original fraction amount, then they were required to calculate the missing fractional value hidden under the ‘splat.’  Learning objectives reinforced include mixed numbers, improper fractions and adding and subtracting.

We also began our new weather unit in science. We began by identifying what we currently know about weather, and then distinguishing between ‘weather’ and ‘climate.’

 Upcoming events include:
Thursday, Jan. 30th– Animal Dragon spelling test
Friday, Jan. 31st– Non-instructional day

We then began identifying and creating mixed numbers, which include both a whole number and a fractional amount. Throughout the week we will continue to look at the relationship between mixed numbers and improper fractions.

Our Student Council met at lunch today, and were excited to announce an upcoming bake sale fundraiser in benefit of the Australian wild fires. Treats will be available to purchase on February 11th & 12th for one dollar each.

Happy Wednesday!

Today students finished up with their skiing residency and completed an obstacle course of challenges. It was a great last day and many students expressed their enjoyment of the program. Brochures will be sent home tomorrow to any families interested in learning more about cross-country ski options through the Foothills Nordic Ski Club.

Today in math, students continued their work with equivalent fractions and started the day with a challenging question which required them to determine three fractions between the values of ½ and 1.  Students approached the problem in a variety of way (and calculations) and presented their results to classmates.

Happy Tuesday!

A great second day of our skiing residency. Students learned important skills in stopping and how to climb back up a small hill.  They also had some fun ‘towing’ their partner around the field.

In math today, students were practicing determining the lowest common multiple and creating equivalent fractions. While playing ‘Fraction War’ students had to determine the lowest multiple, and then create  equivalent fractions with the same denominator in order to determine who won each round.

Tomorrow is the last day of our skiing residency. Students will also be writing their unit test for Magnetism & Electricity and the Scoop Troop spelling group has a quiz on their current spelling words.

Happy Monday,

We began our day energetically as students began their cross-country skiing residency this morning. Students were eager to get outside and started, and they learned some basic skills that allowed them to circle the track and play a tag game.

This afternoon, students competed in a Jeopardy tournament with their team. Students had written test questions last week based on their Magnetism and Electricity unit. Questions were used to create a review game for today and tomorrow. Students will write their science unit test on Wednesday.
