Happy Friday!!
Today in math, students had
an opportunity to experiment with probability through a game called “Pig.” Before
students began their game, they decided if they wanted to practice their addition
or multiplication. Then they each took their turn rolling two dice. When it was
their turn, students would determine the sum or product of their die (depending
on game choice), and would then decide if they want to ‘count’ it and roll
again or ‘bank’ it so the amount was safe and secure. If they ‘count’ the
value, they can roll again and continue to add up the amounts for each roll.
However, if at any time they roll a single 1, they lose all the points in
their count and their turn is over. If at any time, they happened to roll
two 1s, then they earn 25 points for that roll. The game was a great
activity to evaluate the probability of rolling a single 1, while also allowing students the opportunity to practice their addition and multiplication skills.
I would recommend having your
child show you how to play!
